Use this guide if you need knowledge and resources about how to access abortion care.

We believe abortion is critical healthcare that should be accessible by all.  A lack of safe abortion care has severe health, financial, and emotional impact. This impact is even greater for those who have been historically underserved.

Where can I find an abortion provider?

Plan C Pills created a helpful abortion resource guide. This guide can connect you to an abortion provider and other supports you may need.

How much does an abortion cost?

The average cost of a first trimester abortion in the United States is roughly $500. The full cost depends on the type of care,  stage of pregnancy, and travel costs.

Abortion may be fully or partially covered by private or state insurance (i.e. Medicaid).

If you don’t have insurance, you can call an abortion provider to figure out your cost. The National Network of Abortion Funds provides resources to help pay for abortion expenses.

What are pregnancy crisis centers?

There are many clinics that look like abortion providers, but are not. These groups are often called “pregnancy crisis centers.” The goal of these pregnancy crisis centers is to convince you not to have an abortion. These centers try to appear as real clinical providers but do not offer abortion care.

Pregnancy crisis centers are not medical providers. Because of this, these centers do not have to follow health privacy rules (like HIPAA). Any personal and medical information you share with them is not protected. Here is some information about how to spot a pregnancy crisis center.

What are my state's laws about abortion?

Abortion laws vary widely by state. Here is a list of laws for each state.

Washington State Abortion Q&A

Is abortion legal?

Yes. In Washington State you have the legal right to have an abortion.

What are my abortion options?

There are two common abortion options. You can have a medication abortion or a surgical abortion.

A medication abortion is done by taking two types of medicine. You can take this medication at home. You can have a medication abortion up to when you are 11 weeks pregnant.

A surgical abortion is a procedure completed in a medical office or hospital. This procedure is safe and you can receive medication to keep you comfortable.  A surgical abortion procedure is available up to about 24 or 25 weeks into pregnancy. Depending on how many weeks pregnant you are, this procedure may require consecutive visits.

If you don’t know how many weeks pregnant you are, you may want to start with an ultrasound. A local abortion provider can help you with this.

When do I need to make a decision about having an abortion?

You can get an abortion up until “fetal viability”. Viability means that the fetus, if born, could survive. That’s around 24-25 weeks into a pregnancy. You can still get an abortion after 24 to 25 weeks to protect your health or your life.

Do I need to share my reason to have an abortion?

No. In Washington State you can have an abortion for any reason up until viability.

Do I need permission to have an abortion?

No. No matter your age, you do not need to notify or get permission from your parent, guardian, spouse, or partner.

Can a clinician refuse to provide an abortion?

Yes, providers may refuse to provide an abortion.

Be aware that there are many clinics that look like abortion providers, but are not.
